21 April 2022

Tomorrow, is the start of a two-day conference to launch the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) Mathematics Strengthening Strategy: 2022- 2027.

The strategy has been in development for the past two years, taking into account the changes and developments that have taken place as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The strategy includes professional development and training, the constructive use of productive pedagogies, the creation of professional learning environments, research, partnerships, advocacy, and parental and community support.

Mathematics also plays an important role in many subjects and the career pathways of a learner – and how it can influence their future job potential in an ever-changing global environment.

The programme (attached) thus focuses on the role of mathematics in various subject fields, such as coding and robotics, ICT, science, archaeology, music and art.

One of the highlights of the conference will be Saturday’s guest speaker, Mr Jim Adams, a retired scientist and engineer at NASA. Mr Adams is one of many guest speakers that will be present at the conference.

On Saturday, Provincial Minister for Education Debbie Schafer will be officially launching the strategy with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
It’s going to be an action-packed and exciting two-day conference, celebrating the love, passion and importance of mathematics in education.
