Extra Support for Learners Writing Supplementary Examinations

18 January 2011

In the Western Cape, 8 433 candidates qualified for supplementary examinations in the 2010 National Senior Certificate (NSC) Examinations.

Candidates qualify to write supplementary exams if they failed up to two subjects.

At present, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is accepting hundreds of applications to write the supplementary exams and we encourage all those that qualify to register before the closing date, which is on Monday, 24 January 2011.

A significant amount of candidates, 792 to be exact, narrowly missed passing by only 1% in the 2010 NSC exams. Therefore we also encourage these candidates to request a remark of their examination papers.

The closing date for remarking of scripts is Friday, 21 January 2011.

We believe that once requests for remarking have been met and the supplementary examinations completed as per the relevant regulations, there is every chance we would have met or exceeded our 2 000 additional passes target for 2010.

To assist those learners in improving their results in the supplementary examinations, the WCED is offering an extensive revision programme during February and March 2011.

The revision programme commences on 1 February and ends on 13 March 2011. It will be held at 118 school centres across the province from 15:00 to 17:00 on weekdays and from 14:00 to 18:00 on Sundays. Lessons will be conducted by experienced Grade 12 teachers through live broadcasts to selected centres in the eight education districts of the Western Cape.

The NCS subjects to be offered include Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Accounting, Geography, Life Sciences, English First Additional Language and Afrikaans Home Language.

Candidates who wish to take advantage of this opportunity should register with the WCED by the 25th of January 2010. More information on where they can register can be found on the WCED website, or they can contact their former school for further information.

Candidates may register for as many subjects as they wish.

Those candidates who do not have access to the centres that are offering the programmes can purchase support lessons on DVDs at a nominal price from the WCED.

Principals were requested to provide a copy of the revision timetable and the appropriate forms to each candidate who qualified for the February-March supplementary examinations on the day they collected their results at their schools.

Note: Candidates wishing to register for the supplementary examinations or for a remark can contact the exams helpline on 021 467 2300 or visit the Clients Service Centre on the second floor of the Grand Central Building, lower parliament street, Cape Town. The Supplementary examinations will be held between the 14th of Feb and the 25th March 2011.
