Supplementary Examinations Begin

We are pleased that a total of 8 762 candidates registered for the National Senior Certificate supplementary examinations in February and March.

Last year 8 098 of those registered wrote, with the remaining 664 candidates repeating from previous years.

I am encouraged that so many learners that qualified from the Class of 2010 decided to re-write their exams. A total of 8 433 candidates qualified, of which, 96% registered to write.

I wish each and every one of our candidates the best of luck.

Candidates will be writing at 167 examination centres through-out the province.

The first practical examination, Computer Application Technology, began today. This examination will be held at 30 exam centres with 249 registered candidates.

On Monday, the first theory papers will be written and comprise of mostly language papers such as Hindi, Portuguese, German and Italian.

The final examination will be held on the 24th of March. Learners can expect to receive their results in May this year.

This year the Department is assisting candidates to prepare for these examinations by offering an extensive revision programme during February and March.

The revision programme began on the 1st of February and will end on the 13th of March 2011. The programmes are being held at 118 school centres across the province. Lessons are being conducted by experienced Grade 12 teachers through live broadcasts to the selected centres in the eight education districts of the Western Cape.

In terms of the remarking process, 3 733 candidates applied for remarks in 43 subjects. Currently 16 700 scripts are being remarked and candidates can expect to receive these results by the end of February. The subjects with the most demand, include, Mathematics, Life Sciences and History.

These results will be interesting as only 792 candidates missed passing their examinations by only 1%.

We believe that once the remarking process has been completed, as well as the supplementary examinations, there is every chance we would have met or exceeded our 2 000 additional passes target for 2010.
