Don't invite COVID-19 for Christmas

20 December 2021

The Western Cape is now in the fourth wave of COVID-19 with infections rapidly increasing every day.

Many of us have been looking forward to the summer holidays and spending time with our friends and family. Here are the five things you must do to ensure you don’t get or spread COVID-19 this Christmas:

  1. Vaccinate

Although vaccination cannot prevent you from getting COVID-19 or being reinfected, it significantly reduces your chances of getting severe COVID-19. It also remains our best protection against hospitalisation and death due to COVID-19.

Everyone 12 years and older can get the vaccine. Visit https://coronavirus.westerncape.gov.za/vaccine/news for a vaccination site close to you.

  1. Mask up

A well-fitting mask worn over your nose and mouth significantly reduces your chances of getting and spreading COVID-19. Don’t let your guard (and mask) down, even when amongst your family and friends. If you must be indoors, this is essential advice.

  1. Avoid crowds

If you must still do your festive shopping and cannot do it online, choose a time when the shops are not crowded. Ask one person in your household to do the shopping and do not go as a family.

Limit the size of your gatherings, keep it short and outside. Make sure you keep a physical distance from others and wear your mask.

  1. Ventilation

We know that the virus spreads through the air where people are gathered. Make sure you keep all gatherings small, short and outdoors. If you cannot be outdoors, get as much fresh air as possible indoors by opening doors and windows.

If you are using public transport or taxis, make sure you keep the windows open and wear your mask.

  1. Stay home if you feel sick

Assume you have COVID-19 if you develop flu-like symptoms. Covid-19 symptoms can include a cough, sore throat, loss of your sense of smell or taste, or shortness of breath or difficulty breathing. If you feel sick, stay home. If you can’t stay separate from others in your home, wear a mask and open doors and windows.

Go to the hospital or call an ambulance (10177) immediately if you have difficulty breathing, chest pain or pressure that won’t go away, confusion, or can’t wake up completely.

Don’t invite COVID-19 for Christmas. Stay safe and get vaccinated. Even when vaccinated, continue to practice safety precautions, to protect yourself and others.
