This past week saw the introduction of the 12- to 17-year-old age band to the vaccination programme. While welcoming this move, we know people older than 50 years still need to be protected from being hospitalised and dying from COVID-19. Our data shows this can be achieved if the majority are fully vaccinated. We value the lives of our fellow citizens and want to ensure we save many more lives.
This is a tough ask – but by working together towards a safer summer, a safer 2022 – we can ensure we save many of our loved ones in the coming months. We can do this, let’s roll up our sleeves, put our arms out and get vaccinated today!
Our vaccination progress at 20 October:
The total number of individuals vaccinated with at least one dose was 2 243 239 or 45% of the total adult population. We have also fully vaccinated a total of 1 681 838 people or 34% of the total adult population.
The latest data shows that in many areas there is a difference in insured and uninsured populations, and thus the specific focus of the Health Department will be to ensure that those over 50 years old in uninsured areas receive full vaccination by December 2021.
A 3-point step-by-step guide to a safer summer, a safer 2022:
If the majority of us can be vaccinated with COVID-19 vaccines by December, we will have a much safer summer.
Current available shows that vaccination is the best way of saving ourselves from illness, death and ongoing disruptions of our lives and work. That is why we urge you to vaccinate as soon as possible.
Please also remember to keep on staying safe, by ensuring that you continue to wear a mask, and ensure that you ensure open windows, fresh air and good ventilation. If you have symptoms, please stay home to protect those around you.
People over the age of 50 are at increased risk of COVID-19. This risk becomes worse when combined with underlying illnesses (such as kidney disease, diabetes, hypertension etc.). We all know of someone we love and care for in this age category. So, we owe it to them to do everything we can to protect them. If you are, or know of someone, 50 years and older, please go for the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible.
Why is it so important for over 50s to be vaccinated
Over a 12-week period during the third wave, those aged 50 years and older accounted for 30% of cases, 60% of hospital admissions and 83% of deaths. Research in the Western Cape shows that people over 50 years have 7.5 times higher risk of contracting severe COVID-19. A fully vaccinated person is 4.3 times less likely to die of COVID-19 than an unvaccinated person.
Younger persons under 50 who have underlying health conditions are also at high risk of severe COVID-19 disease. Such persons should get themselves vaccinated as soon as possible."
Being vaccinated against COVID-19 is now easier than ever. Our Department continues to make access to vaccination easy and friendly:
