A first in over 26 years for the community of Dysselsdorp

15 October 2021

Today, Western Cape Minister of Human Settlements, Tertuis Simmers conducted a sod turning to officially launch the Dysselsdorp Development Project in Oudtshoorn. Minister Simmers was accompanied by the Executive Mayor of Oudsthoorn Municipality, Vlancio Donson.

With an overall budget of R129 million, the project is expected to create 534 housing opportunities upon its completion in 2023. It is envisaged that the first 150 units of the 534 will be delivered before the end of the current financial year.

The construction of the 150 units will create a minimum of 128 on site jobs for the local residents with more opportunities to come, as the development progresses. 30 local subcontractors have also been enlisted on the register of suppliers that will be utilised over the duration of this development.

Minister Simmers said:” It is with great delight, that we conduct this sod turning, as this is the first housing development project in over 26 years for this community of Dysselsdorp. Therefore a lifelong dream for many of these residents to live in improved conditions and in a dignified manner will now finally come to fruition. This project will change the landscape of the community, which will enhance the aesthetics of the area.

As the Western Cape Government, we remain committed to creating accelerated housing opportunities, while promoting social inclusion through the development of integrated, resilient, safe and sustainable human settlements in open opportunity society”.
