More than 1MILLION people are fully vaccinated!

11 September 2021

Recently reported data confirmed the effectiveness of vaccines when it comes to reducing hospitalization and death.

This is very good news and gives reassurance to those who have not yet been vaccinated that vaccines will save their lives. Data of cases diagnosed with COVID-19 in those over 60 years during the week of 14 – 20 August when the Western Cape was in its peak of the third wave of COVID-19 infections shows:

  • 2455 contracted COVID-19, of which 92% of people were NOT fully vaccinated
  • 729 people required hospitalization, with 96% NOT fully vaccinated
  • 292 people died due to COVID-19, but 98.3% were NOT fully vaccinated

As we enter another week of our vaccination rollout, we appeal to every eligible citizen in the province to take up the opportunity to be vaccinated, so they have protection against severe illness and death.

This week’s vaccination performance

200 930 vaccinations were administered for the week 6 -10 September:

  • Monday = 36 650
  • Tuesday = 39 421
  • Wednesday = 40 735
  • Thursday = 40 291
  • Friday = 43 833

Overall vaccination performance (as of 10 September August)

This week saw the province record the 1million mark of citizens who are fully vaccinated (1,004,089). 653,911 people are also partially vaccinated and will be going for the second dose soon. In total, 2 414 443 vaccines have thus far been administered.

We still have to reach many more people if we want to save our summer and ensure our communities are protected against COVID-10. As at 9 September:

  • 836,004 vaccinations have been administered to those over the age of 60 year. Of which, 401,711 have already been fully vaccinated
  • 508,234 in the 50-59 age bracket have been vaccinated. Of which, 238,353 have already been fully vaccinated
  • 613,330 in the 35-49 age bracket have been vaccinated. Of which, 246,414 have already been fully vaccinated, and
  • 322,727 over 18-year-olds have been vaccinated. Of which, 117,611 have already been fully vaccinated

To accommodate citizens who are unable to attend our vaccination sites during the week, we will have 26 sites operational on Saturday, 11 September.

What to expect next week (13 - 17 September)

We intend to administer 200 000 vaccines per week, which will enable us to have 70% of those aged 50 years and older fully vaccinated and at least been able to administer at least one dose to 70% of those in the age bracket of 18 – 49 years by December.

We look forward to welcoming everyone over the age of 18 years to our 200 vaccination sites as well as more than 100 private sites. For more detail on vaccination sites in your area, visit https://coronavirus.westerncape.gov.za/vaccine-dashboard.

The effectiveness of the vaccines, and how they reduce your risk of ending up in hospital or dying from COVID-19, is clear.

We thank everyone who has come forward for vaccination already and ask them to further support us by being vaccine ambassadors. Those who will be going for vaccination, if you know of someone who has not yet been vaccinated, bring them with!
