On Wednesday, 6 April 2011, Dr Ivan Meyer, Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport in the Western Cape, visited the District Six Museum, where he discussed the importance of the role of museums in communities.

Up until the 1970s, District Six was home to almost a tenth of the population in the Metro and the large community of ex-residents gradually contributed their donations towards the unique collection of this historic and still growing collection at the museum. The museum chronicles the history of the District Six area during the Apartheid era, the forced removals of the residents, and the role of sport in District Six and serves to preserve the heritage of the community. It covers the period from the turn of the century to the present.
