Minister Calls for Mentors for Department's Bursary Scheme Graduates

19 April 2011

Minister Robin Carlisle calls upon registered professionals in the built environment industry in the Western Cape to join the mentorship programme of the Department of Transport and Public Works' Masakh'isizwe Bursary Scheme.

The Masakh'isizwe Bursary Scheme currently sponsors 247 students studying towards a qualification in the built environment at the universities of Cape Town and Stellenbosch and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology.

"I invite all professionals, retired or young, in the built environment industry to grasp this opportunity to share their wealth of knowledge in their professions and help build a new crop of future leading minds and leaders in this industry. We need a pool of civil, mechanical and electrical engineers, architects, quantity surveyors, town and regional planners to mentor the ever-increasing number of our students so that they have the sufficient support and guidance to establish their professional careers. Mentoring is a crucial aspect of career development that enriches both the mentor and mentee in different ways."

"With the Masakh'isizwe bursaries, my Department goes beyond handing out study grants to academically promising students from underprivileged backgrounds. We take care of their study needs to create a study friendly environment that will enable them to excel academically and not be derailed by matters which have nothing to do with their academic performance."

The successful mentors will be required to dedicate at least eight hours per week to mentor a maximum of four students. Their remuneration will be equivalent to the standard hourly rate of managers in the civil services.

Interested individuals can contact Ms Lee-Ann Holland on lholland@pgwc.gov.za or 021 483 5851 for more details of the mentorship programme.
