Dam levels update and winter preparations continue

21 April 2021

The latest average dam level for dams in the Western Cape is 50.3% (2020: 38.9%) while the latest average level for dams providing water to the City of Cape Town, is 69.7% (2020: 56.4%).

Anton Bredell, the minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning in the Western Cape, says the province is preparing for the winter months and the expected rain.

“The Western Cape is traditionally a winter rainfall area. Our municipalities are currently preparing for the wetter colder weather. The City of Cape Town roads and infrastructure teams are clearing out stormwater systems in flood prone areas across the city in preparation of the winter and recently did a clean up in Delft.”

Bredell has urged the public to assist their local councils in keeping drains and channels in front of their homes clear of debris, leaves and sand where possible.

“The public can also help by reporting cases of blocked drains to their local municipal offices as soon as possible.”

In the City of Cape Town the public can contact the City’s Call Centre on 0860 103 089 to report flooding, blocked drains and service disruptions.
