Statement by minister Marais: We mourn the loss of a leading light for isiXhosa

8 April 2021

The passing of Professor Sizwe Satyo last week has left a void in the sphere of Language development in our province.

Professor Satyo broke many barriers during the progression of his career, including being appointed as the first black professor of African languages at the University of Cape Town in 1988. He was also the Chair of the Honours programme in the Department of African Languages and Literatures, a position which he held until 2010.

A widely published author, Professor Satyo was also one of the pioneers in the development of the isiXhosa Lexicography. He was also involved in the promotion of study of isiXhosa through the publication of various language series for use in schools.

My department’s Language Service unit regularly consulted with Professor Satyo in the development of isiXhosa terminology and we will miss his knowledge, wisdom and guidance. He was extremely passionate about the development and promotion of isiXhosa and we know that his legacy will live on for many years to come.

Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends and colleagues. We hope that you find comfort in knowing that he has made a meaningful impact in the space of developing the isXhosa language and thereby preserving the Heritage and ways of knowing embedded in isiXhosa.
