Minister Fritz: Update on Building Blocks Investigation

14 June 2011

Statement by Minister of Social Development, Albert Fritz

The results of the Forensic Pathology Services report on the two babies who died at the Building Blocks facility in Pinelands two weeks ago have been concluded. It was found that the babies died of respiratory tract complications - natural causes.

This finding has necessitated that the Department of Social Development undertake a formal evaluation of the conditions at Building Blocks to ensure the health and safety of the remaining children, who are in temporary safe care with the department.

Also, Jenny Berger, who runs the facility, is a registered safety parent and is permitted to care for no more than six children at any given time. The department is assisting Ms Berger to have her facility registered as a children's home so that all eight babies can be returned to her care.

This process will be wrapped up as speedily as possible, but will take as long as is necessary to ensure full compliance with the Children's Act.
