The Minister of Community Safety, Albert Fritz, welcomes the invitation for all interested persons to apply to be appointed in terms of section 11 of the Western Cape Community Safety Act, 2013 (Act 3 of 2013) (the Act), as the Western Cape Provincial Police Ombudsman.

An invitation to apply for appointment as the Western Cape Provincial Police Ombudsman was published in the Provincial Gazette on 16 November 2020.  The closing date for applications is 7 December 2020 and has also been advertised on the e-recruiting platform of the Western Cape Government.

The functions of the Ombudsman are:

(a)    To receive and investigate complaints submitted in terms of section 16 of the Act regarding inefficiency of the police or a breakdown in relations between the police and any community; and

(b)    To perform the other functions assigned to him or her under the Act.

Minister Fritz said, “It is imperative that applicants be suitably qualified, with experience in the field of law or policing. To ensure that policing inefficiencies are ironed out and relations between communities and police stations are maintained, we must appoint a person who is truly fit for purpose. Ultimately we want to ensure professional policing.”

The appointment will be made in accordance with section 11(2) of the Act for a non-renewable term not exceeding five years. Shortlisted candidates must undergo a vetting process.

All applications must be submitted in writing, be accompanied by a comprehensive curriculum vitae and must be submitted on or before 12:00 on 7 December 2020 by:
