Minister Plato Voices Concern over Attacks on Table Mountain "Hotspots"

28 June 2011

Media Statement by Minister of Community Safety, Dan Plato

I am deeply concerned about the recent spate of attacks on Table Mountain, seemingly taking place in and around certain hotspots on the mountain chain. I have called an urgent meeting tomorrow with senior officials from SANParks, SAPS and Metro Police, as well as the chairperson of the Table Mountain Forum.

This Forum, set up by my predecessor, Albert Fritz, earlier this year is, without doubt, the only way to make our mountain safer and has begun to produce results. I am absolutely committed to this approach and will do all in my power to increase its effectiveness.

The Forum initiative is being driven by the Department of Community Safety in partnership with representatives from all law enforcement agencies, SANParks and the civil society organisations: Table Mountain Safety Action Group, Greenpoint and Oranjekloof City Improvement District, Pedal Power, Mountain Club of South Africa and the Paragliding Association.
