DCAS supported Black Powder Championships hits the bullseye

16 November 2020

The resumption of sport in the Western Cape continued successfully this weekend as the annual Black Powder Shooting South African National Championships was hosted at the Atlantis Military Shooting range.

The event was hosted by the Western Province Black Powder Shooting Federation and supported by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS). The DCAS Sports Promotion Directorate allocated R20 000 to the federation to support the hosting of the event. Departmental representatives also attended the event and assisted with the medal handovers.

Black powder shooting is a target sport for historical muzzle loading firearms loaded with traditional black powder. These firearms include matchlock, flintlock and percussion pistols, revolvers, muskets, rifles and shotguns.

Pistol and revolver matches take place at 25 and 50 metres, while rifle matches are shot at distances from 50 to 1000 metres. The SA National Championships saw a total of 22 top shooters competing with rifles and handguns from distances of 25 to 900 metres.

The event offered the participants the experience needed to compete in additional national and international competitions, and was an economic injection to the hosting community.
