New Crestway High School in Retreat

Teachers and learners are already enjoying the facilities at the new Crestway High School in Retreat, with Phase 2 of the project reaching practical completion in September 2020. The school can accommodate 1 100 learners and the existing facility could be expanded to accommodate 1 480 learners in the future.

The new school was built to replace old school buildings originally built out of asbestos, metal and wood.

New teaching facilities include:

  • 30 standard classrooms
  • 3 science laboratory rooms
  • 2 multi-purpose classrooms
  • a media centre
  • a computer laboratory
  • a consumer studies classroom
  • a hall
  • toilet facilities
  • an administrative building
  • caretaker’s facilities

The Department of Transport and Public Works created 270 opportunities for short-term jobs during this construction project. A total of R34 million was spent on targeted contractor businesses, R24 million on suppliers and manufacturers, R6.5 million on local suppliers, and R3.5 million on targeted local labour.
