Mowbray Maternity Hospital Embraces Greater Good on Mandela Day

24 July 2011

In November 2009, the United Nations declared 18 July as Nelson Mandela International Day. Last year, the day was marked with acts of good work in communities throughout the world with 67 minutes of volunteer service.

The 67-minute initiative, as part of Nelson Mandela's birthday, was commemorated by Mowbray Maternity Hospital on Monday, 18 July 2011, as they donated blankets, jackets, pants and knitted scarves to the Loaves and Fishes Shelter in Salt River. The hospital kicked off its winter campaign earlier this year, where its staff and their families collected warm winter items for those less fortunate.

Loaves and Fishes offers a shelter to the homeless, providing them with three warm meals per day and the necessary counselling and encouragement to go back into society and successfully rebuild their lives.

After the handover of the items to the shelter, the House Mother took the hospital staff on a tour of the facility and thanked Mowbray Maternity Hospital for the generous donation made to the shelter and those it serves.
