Media Alert: Another New School Opens in the Western Cape

25 August 2011

On Friday, Minister Donald Grant will be opening the new Westlake Primary School. There has been substantial growth in Westlake over the last decade and proposals for a new school in the area date back as far as 2002.

However, the school was earmarked to be built in 2010 as part of the Western Cape Education Department's (WCED) school infrastructure plan. The building of the school is also a co-operative venture between the provincial government and private donors, the Ackerman foundation, who have financially contributed to the building of this school and is an important example of how the private sector and the community can assist the Western Cape Government in improving the quality of education in the Province.

The school is one of eight schools that have been completed this year as part of the WCED's infrastructure plan. In 2010, Minister Grant announced a new school infrastructure plan for the Province which included the building of 25 new schools, 20 replacement schools and additional classrooms.

Eleven additional schools are currently under construction and a further 12 are in planning stages.
