Minister hands over more than 1 000 title deeds in first six months in office

20 December 2019

Western Cape Human Settlements Minister, Tertuis Simmers, says the handover of 1 144 title deeds since taking office at the end of May, is a clear demonstration of the provincial government’s commitment to accelerating ownership across the province.

Title Deed handovers occurred from our Helpdesk (50), in Delft (85), Blue Downs (52) and Belhar (19) in the City of Cape Town, in Caledon (120) and Tesselaarsdal (77) in the Theewaterskloof municipal area, Ebenhaeser (34) in the Matzikama municipal area, in Saron (269), and Mbekweni (75) in the Drakenstein municipal area, in Oudtshoorn (357), Riversdale (3) and Wilderness (3) in the Southern Cape.

Minister Simmers said: “I’m pleased with the pace at which we are moving. These handovers clearly show that we’re not paying lip service in our aim to improve the lives of our people. While some focus on one aspect of housing opportunities, we’ve rapidly ensured that homeownership is prioritised.

Our strategy is clear and we are effectively executing it. It is through processes such as these that the dignity of our people is restored. I’d also like to commend municipalities for buying into our vision of making more of our people fully-fledged homeowners.

As early as January 2020, I will be handing over more title deeds, as this is one of the best mechanisms to address the injustices of the past.

As the Western Cape Government, we remain committed to accelerating human settlement delivery, while promoting social inclusion through the development of integrated, resilient and sustainable human settlements in an open opportunity society. We will also continue striving towards establishing an enabling environment, so that we are better placed to grant beneficiaries security of tenure and make more residents legal homeowners by handing over these title deeds”
