Minister Meyer Congratulates Team Western Cape for Outstanding Performance

9 October 2011

On Monday, 10 October 2011, Dr Ivan Meyer, Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport in the Western Cape, congratulated the young sportsmen and women from the Western Cape on their excellent performance at the annual South African Games.

The 2011 SA Games, in which eight provinces participated, were held in Polokwane between 2 and 7 October 2011. The Games are open to able-bodied and disabled sportsmen and women and provide a platform for talent identification, as well as the opportunity for developing world-class sport stars to excel.

Team Western Cape, consisting of 448 young athletes competing in 13 sport codes, finished second overall, with a total medal count of 132 (47 gold, 42 silver and 43 bronze).

"The results that I see today are proof that there is great sporting talent in the Western Cape and that the future of sport in this province in many sport codes is bright," said Minister Meyer.

"I'd like to thank the support staff for ensuring the safety of these learners during the trip, and the coaches for getting these young men and women ready to compete on a national level. Their hard work and dedication have clearly paid off, as the team brings home 132 new medals to the province. To the athletes, I say congratulations on your excellent performance," said Minister Meyer.

The team that really stood out as an example of excellence was the boxing team, which won eight medals between the eight athletes - three bronze, two silver and three gold. The team was voted team of the tournament while Asemahle Sentile was named boxer of the tournament. The swimming and athletics teams also excelled, with each team winning 33 medals.

Team Western Cape participated in the following sport codes: Athletics, Amateur Boxing, Golf, Cricket (boys' and girls' teams), Hockey (boys' and girls' teams), Football (deaf, intellectually impaired, boys, girls, Cerebral Palsy), Goal ball, Gymnastics, Rugby (boys' and girls' teams), Netball, Swimming (physically disabled, intellectually impaired, deaf and able-bodied), Table Tennis and Tennis.
