Statement: Western Cape Disaster Management offers assistance

19 November 2019

The Western Cape Department of Local government has offered its assistance to the disaster struck KwaZulu-Natal in relation to the ongoing severe weather event that has hit that province.

“This morning I conveyed our sympathies to those who have experienced loss and suffering over the past few days, in a letter to MEC Sipho Hlomuka’s office and offered to help where and how we can,” says Anton Bredell, the Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning in the Western Cape.

Bredell says disasters do not recognize boundaries and in the spirit of cooperative governance, the Western Cape government has extended its support.

“We have a specialized urban search and rescue capability that is on permanent standby. In addition, we also have highly skilled disaster response and recovery expertise that could easily complement and assist our colleagues in KwaZulu-Natal during this time,” says Bredell.
