Minister Fritz meets with Old Mutual to partner on safety solutions

1 November 2019

Today, the Minister of Community Safety, Albert Fritz, delivered the keynote address on the impact of crime on business at Old Mutual, Pinelands, at a collaborative stakeholder engagement breakfast. The focus of the engagement was to foster partnerships between private business and government to safeguard the province. Please see photos attached.

The value of today’s collaboration was that it encouraged dialogue between stakeholders on pertinent matters impacting society; promoted stakeholder interaction and information sharing; and considered the concerns within the communities. A panel discussion was also held with Cape Chamber of Commerce CEO, Mr Geoffrey Jacobs, Business Against Crime Acting CEO, Billy Graham, WECBOF CEO, Arifa Parkar, Accelerate Cape Town CEO, Ryan Ravens, and Old Mutual Executive Sponsor, Jean Minnaar, which focused particularly on cybercrime.

Minister Fritz said, “At today’s engagement, I outlined how partnerships are of importance in the Provincial Safety Plan which will ensure additional law enforcement and 150 investigators on the ground over the next 5 years. The safety plan will not succeed unless we build strong and lasting partnerships with all components of society. Partnerships must be built with all stakeholders, including with the SAPS, the City of Cape Town, private security companies, private sector stakeholders and community safety structures.”

“This partner-centric approach to the Premier’s Safety Plan requires that we take both a Whole-of-Society-Approach, as well as a Whole-of-Government-Approach to delivering the vision of a safer Western Cape for all. I share the Premier’s view that the success of his programme will lie in the ability to form strong and durable partnerships,” said Minister Fritz.

Minister Fritz further added, “A significant partnership envisioned within the Premier’s Safety Plan are ‘Partnerships with communities and the private sector’. The Western Cape Safety Plan will be implemented through strong social, stakeholder and community engagement including civil society and the private sector. Importantly, collaboration with communities will be key to receiving and disseminating relevant crime-related information to understand specific crime trends affecting different communities which will assist the Provincial Government in better evaluating necessary changes.”

Under the leadership of Minister Fritz, the Department of Community Safety remains committed to building strategic partnerships which will safeguard the Western Cape.
