National Road Safety Debate and PET competition

The National Road Safety Debate Competition started on a high note yesterday (24 September 2019) when the Western Cape rural and special needs debate teams won the first round in their categories.

Thirty learners from different schools across the Western Cape are representing the province in the National Road Safety Debate and Participatory Education Techniques (PET) competition in Johannesburg this week. The competition is hosted by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC).

The Western Cape urban team debated yesterday against the North West Province motion: “The development of an integrated road traffic management platform will substantially contribute to the safety of all road users”.

The Western Cape rural team debated against the Eastern Cape Province motion: “Government’s failure to put in place effective enforcement measures aggravates the level of carnage on our roads.”

The Western Cape special needs team debated against KwaZulu-Natal motion: “The community outreach approach is effective to reduce crashes.”

On Tuesday, 24 September, the rural and special needs teams won the first round in their respective categories. Today the rural team will be debating against KwaZulu-Natal in the second round of the competition.

The special needs team will be going into the finals today against North West debating the motion: "Non-motorised transport is the solution to the transport problems.”
