Overberg BTG invests in corporate integration and productivity

The Overberg District kickstarted the 2019 Better Together Games (BTG) series on 13 September 2019 at the Glaskasteel Sports Complex in Bredasdorp.

Air Force Base (AFB) Overberg Chaplain, Maryke Venter, shared an appropriate message in which she advised that rules should not only exist in sporting codes when we compete with one another, but that we also need to abide by all the rules in our daily lives.

Various teams from across the Overberg were proudly united by the national anthem, performed by learners from De Heide Primary, while the South African flag was hoisted in the background. A moment of silence followed in remembrance of the late Springbok icon Chester Williams.

DCAS Deputy Director for Major Sport Events, Nicolette Pietersen, expressed her gratitude to the local municipalities as well as Old Mutual, Nedbank and Peninsula Beverages for their continued support of the BTG and encouraged participants to play in the spirit of fair play.

Deputy Mayor Zukiswa Tonisi of the Cape Agulhas Municipality welcomed all the stakeholders and dignitaries and officially declared the games open.  She called for integration between the different spheres of government and inspired employees to invest in their wellness with a ripple effect into corporate productivity. She used the opportunity to thank the employees of the Overberg for diligently serving their respective local communities. A moment of reflection followed to show respect to people who are affected by gender violence in our country.

After the traditional parade by the different teams, the Mispah School from Elim wowed enthusiastic participants and loyal supporters with their energetic performance. This year the sporting codes varied from chess to netball, volleyball, dominoes, tug-of-war and many more. The most welcome, drizzling rain couldn’t dampen the excitement of the teams who competed against each other.

The next BTG will take place on 20 September in the Cape Winelands and will be followed on 27 September in the Eden District. Central Karoo will be hosting their games on National Recreation Day on 4 October and the West Coast will get their turn on 11 October 2019. The Metro BTG will take place on 25 October 2019 in Stellenbosch.
