Opening of the R102 between Tergniet and Fraaiuitsig

9 July 2019

A section of the R102 that has been under construction between Tergniet and Fraaiuitsig near Little Brak River is now open to traffic. This is part of a Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) project to upgrade the MR344 (R102) between Hartenbos and Great Brak River, as well as the DR1578 between Tergniet and Wolwedans. The project will be completed in April 2020, if everything goes according to plan.

Motorists are requested to strictly adhere to the applicable speed limit on the newly opened section. Opening a road in winter is not ideal because there is a risk of damage to the new surface. If speeding vehicles cause an excessive loss of stone, the contractor will have to put stop/go controls in place again until warm weather returns.

The De Dekke intersection at Great Brak River has been changed into a traffic circle and the traffic island is under construction. For the next two days, flag operators will be on duty during the day and at night to help motorists get used to the new circle.

The two-way stop/go control point at the Fraaiuitsig intersection will become a three-way control point, and waiting times will be slightly longer. The section between De Dekke and Fraaiuitsig remains a construction area.

Motorists are asked to exercise extreme caution when using the R102. Construction work will continue for the next nine months along both sides of the road, including the newly opened section between Tergniet and Fraaiuitsig.

The high-quality road infrastructure that DTPW provides is an important component of a safe and effective transport system, and an enabler of economic and social development in the Western Cape.
