Team Western Cape announced at Provincial Indigenous Games

After a weekend of friendly competition, the team set to represent the Western Cape at the National Indigenous Games Festival was announced. Teams from the Cape Winelands, Overberg, Central Karoo, Eden, West Coast and Metro braved cold and wet weather and took to the fields to participate in the provincial games, hosted by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS),  that took place from 6 to 7 July at the Western Cape Sport School.

Younger people from across the various regions gave their all and took part in codes such as dibeki, diketo, marabaraba, jukskei, kho-kho and driestokkies to showcase their sporting skills. At the end of the weekend, during the closing ceremony, the overall winners of the games were announced. Team Metro took first position, Eden district came second and Cape Winelands was placed third.

There was great excitement when it was announced who will represent the Western Cape at the National Indigenous Games Festival, as well as the coaches and technical officials who will accompany the athletes. The National Indigenous Games Festival will take place from 22 to 27 September 2019 at the Seshego Stadium in Polokwane.

Philasande Macwili, Deputy Director at DCAS, said that the Western Cape is committed to the promotion of Indigenous Games.  The Games has the potential to revive and activate cultural sport and recreational actives that were used to build societies in the past and which may help to alleviate the social ills of today.
