NSC/SC June 2019 examinations – Afrikaans HL and FAL P3 rewrite on 11 July 2019

5 July 2019

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) amended the National Senior Certificate (NSC)/Senior Certificate (SC) June 2019 examinations timetable to accommodate officials and candidates travelling during the election period.

In the revised timetable, subjects scheduled to be written on 07 and 09 May 2019 were moved to 12–14 June 2019 and the Afrikaans Home Language and First Additional Language Paper 3 examinations changed from 12 June 2019 at 14:00 to 11 June 2019 at 09:00.

At the time that the timetable was amended, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) examinations registration section had already couriered admission letters to the NSC candidates’ registration schools. These admission letters reflected the original June 2019 examinations timetable.

The WCED examinations section communicated widely with candidates regarding the change in the examinations timetable for the June 2019 examinations through the media, social media, bulk sms, emailed letters to schools and examination centres.

However, during the conduct of the examinations, provinces, including the WCED, received complaints from candidates who missed the examinations for Afrikaans Home Language/First Additional Language Paper 3, citing confusion with the revised timetable dates and times. The DBE has now resolved to accommodate these candidates by supplying back-up papers in both Afrikaans Home Language Paper 3 and Afrikaans First Additional Language Paper 3.

Candidates who have written Afrikaans Paper 1 AND Paper 2 but were absent for Paper 3 will be given an opportunity to write Afrikaans Home Language/First Additional Language Paper 3 on 11 July 2019 at 14:00. Please note that it will not be written at the original writing venues but that dedicated combined centres will be used. Candidates must phone the Office of the Director: Examinations Administration on tel. no. 021 467 2945 for confirmation of their examination venue.

Please note that only candidates who did not write Afrikaans Home Language and First Additional Language Paper 3 on Tuesday, 11 June 2019 will be allowed to participate in the rewrite. Candidates who have already written Afrikaans Home Language and First Additional Language Paper 3 will not be allowed to rewrite.

The Directorate: Examinations Administration is concluding the arrangements for the rewrite.
