Construction of new pedestrian bridge at Somerset West

The Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) has started the construction of a pedestrian bridge on the N2 at Garden Village, Somerset West, just before the intersection with De Beers Avenue. This R22 million project is expected to be completed towards the end of 2020.

Pedestrians, including learners at Gordon High School and Danie Ackermann Primary School, cross the road at peak traffic times. Because there is no safe place to cross, a number of pedestrians have been killed here. The completion of the new bridge will be a major safety improvement for pedestrians and motorists travelling on the N2.

The bridge will consist of concrete ramps and stairs supported on reinforced concrete columns. The foundations will be comprised of spread footings and piles. The 48 m main span will be a structural steel arch with a concrete deck. Appurtenant works on this contract include the protection of some existing services at the site, drainage improvements, roadside furniture and fencing, kerbing, channelling and walkway asphalting, and brick paving.  

Construction activities will have a limited impact on commuters using the N2. The road closure necessary to put the steel arch in place will be done at night. The project will create a number of short-term employment and skills training opportunities for people from the area.
