Dias Museum and Mossel Bay locals celebrate International Museum Day together

22 May 2019

The Bartolomeu Dias Museum in Mossel Bay celebrated International Museum Day by hosting a speech evening for four local schools and opening two new exhibitions on Wednesday 15 May 2019.

Learners from the Indwe, Sao Bras, Albertinia and Great Brak high schools took part in the speech evening, where they made five-minute-long presentations and answered museum-related questions in front of an audience of their peers and parents. Mbulelo Mrubata, the museum manager, said the main objective of the speech evening “was to teach learners public speaking and presentation skills”.

The two new exhibitions are both mobile exhibitions which travel to affiliated museums and other locations around the province. The first covers “modern slavery” around the world and has been placed at the Thusong Centre, in KwaNonqaba Township, Mossel Bay. The second details activities taking place at other affiliated museums in the Western Cape and has been placed at the Dias Museum.

These are the second and third new exhibitions to open at the museum in recent weeks. In March a temporary exhibition about the lives and importance of honeybees opened as part of a partnership with local beekeepers.

The Bartolomeu Dias Museum recently celebrated its 30th birthday in February, almost 531 years to the day after the Portuguese explorer first set foot on South African soil.
