History of Knysna preserved through launch of Oral History Initiative

17 April 2019

The history of Knysna and its people will be preserved for all to enjoy for generations to come with the launch of the Oral History Initiative in Knysna.

The Western Cape Provincial Library Service, in partnership with the Knysna Municipality, hosted the launch, which took place on Monday, 15 April 2019 at the Hornlee Community Hall.

The history and stories of Knysna, Hornlee, Sedgefield, Masifunda, Kayalethu, Karatara and Rheenendal were captured on DVD and handed over to the public libraries in the various communities for the public to view. Approximately 100 storytellers from the surrounding areas attended the event, as well as the Executive Mayor of Knysna Municipality Cllr Mark Willemse.

Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais, said that the initiative aims to capture and preserve the unique stories of communities within the Western Cape and encouraged the community of Knysna, as well as surrounding communities, to share their personal histories and experiences so that it can be recorded and kept alive for future generations to celebrate their heritage.

The department continues to support communities in their endeavours to capture and preserve their previously untold stories. Communities should support this initiative and keep their history alive by retelling it. Let us tell and preserve our country’s history for all community members BETTER TOGETHER.
