National Assembly congratulates Western Cape on SA’s lowest unemployment rate

10 April 2019

The Office of Western Cape Premier Helen Zille yesterday received formal congratulations from the National Assembly on having achieved South Africa’s lowest unemployment rate.

In a letter from Speaker Baleka Mbete following a motion passed in parliament, it was noted that the province’s unemployment rate had dropped to 19.3%, and was 14 percentage points below the national average on the expanded unemployment definition.

The letter further congratulated the Province on:

  • Achieving South Africa’s highest access to Healthcare at 91.5% of all residents living within 30 minutes of a healthcare facility;
  • Having completed over 200 000 housing opportunities since 2009;
  • The distribution of over 100 000 title deeds since 2009.

The letter reads: “The Assembly congratulates the Western Cape provincial government in achieving these massive feats”.

Premier Zille said: “For 10 years we have been building the capable state in the Western Cape. We are South Africa’s cleanest government with the most clean audits. This ensures that every rand goes towards service delivery, which is why we were able to accomplish huge projects like connecting over 80% of schools to free internet. Thanks must go to the Cabinet and all our dedicated officials within the Western Cape Government.”

The National Assembly letter is attached.
