The new kid in the Neighbourhood - The NHW Brand

5 April 2019

The Neighbourhood Watch Volunteerism Campaign is the result of the call by Minister Alan Winde for the professionalisation of the NHW Accreditation and Support Programme in order to enhance the image of the programme and reinforce safety messages and initiatives within the community.

Directorate: Strategic Services and Communications, with the support of a Communications agency, was tasked to transform neighbourhood watches in the Western Cape.  This does not just include the brand but a strategy to actively recruit more people to become members of their local accredited Neighbourhood Watch.

The identifier

The aim was to create a modern and sleek identifier and to reposition neighbourhood watches in an appealing and encouraging manner. Input was received from various stakeholders and NHW’s we would like to introduce the brand inceptions and considerations detailed as follows;

The strategy

The aim is to demonstrate that everyone has a role to play in their neighbourhood watch. No matter how small, or how far removed the contribution may seem, every effort makes the community safer. People are encouraged to sign up with their neighbourhood watch.

The initial campaign will be rolled out in: Nyanga, Phillipi, Delft, Khayelitsha, Kraaifontein, Gugulethu, Ocean View, Mitchells Plain, Bishop Lavis, Lavender Hill, Paarl, Hermanus and George. Promotion will be done via Facebook, billboards, via radio adverts on selected community radio stations and communication collateral such as branded caps, t-shirts, water bottles, lanyards, etc.

Message by Minister Alan Winde

The Western Cape has one of the world’s best and most active neighbourhood watch systems. With deep care for one another, members of our communities are keeping a watchful eye over their streets with the aim of transforming them into safer environments.

Their hard work and dedication has paid off, with a 6.8% reduction in property related crime last year.

It is clear that when we all watch, we are all safer, and I would like to applaud the active moms, dads, grannies, grandpas, young people, men and women who are making a positive difference in our communities on a daily basis. Now a further opportunity presents itself do lot a lot more.

Let us all create a #SaferWesternCape"
