Media alert: Minister Marais to present funding to sport development and museums

3 April 2019

Tomorrow, 4 April 2019, will be the first of 6 ceremonial cheque handovers in which Minister Anroux Marais will present the budgeted appropriation to sport councils and affiliated museums in the province.

To financially support the 24 sports federations in the Cape Winelands through transformation, development and capacity building programmes, the sports council will receive R1 310 000 and R460 000 for major events in the district. In addition, the Western Cape Canoe Union will receive R75 000 in support of the Berg River Canoe Marathon this year.

Our Department also provides affiliated province-aided and local museums with annual subsidies and grant-in-aid payments.

This funding is part of our ongoing efforts to promote, transform and highlight the crucial role heritage and museums play in our communities.

A total of  R3 034 724 will be presented to the following museums to create public awareness around our affiliated museums, and to continue the work of preservation, research, education and promotion of museum collections in their care:

·         Huguenot Museum

·         Montagu Museum

·         Oude Kerk Volksmuseum

·         Paarl Museum

·         Stellenbosch Museum

·         Togryers Museum
