Cape Winelands' young drama stars light up Ceres Town Hall

18 February 2019

Some of the Western Cape’s brightest young stage talents are a step closer to performing at the Zabalaza Festival and the KKNK after taking part in the Cape Winelands Drama Festival in Ceres on Saturday 16 February.

The event was hosted by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) in collaboration with the Witzenberg Municipality, Cape Winelands District Municipality, the Baxter Theatre and the Zabalaza Festival.

The Cape Winelands Drama Festival featured eight drama groups from Mbekweni, Zwelethemba, Worcester, Bonnievale, Nqubela, Robertson and Kayamandi. The groups competed for prizes and a place in the grand finale.

Adjudicators included well-known, award-winning actress, Jill Levenberg (Suidooster and Ellen Pakkies), and Bulelani Mabutyana and Mdu Kweyama from the Baxter’s Zabalaza Festival.

Kwakhanye Aftercare was eventually declared as the overall winner, with African Calling from Nqubela also qualifying for the April 2019 Grand Finale. The other award winners were:

  • Best Ensemble: Makupula High Schools
  • Best Director: Asandile Swakamisa
  • Best Writer: Ntandazo Peter
  • Best Supporting Actor: Redewaan Willemse
  • Best Supporting Actress: Simone Mase
  • Best Actor: Yongama Mqela
  • Best Actress: Sanelle Kok
  • Best Production Runner-up: African Calling
  • Best Production Winner: Kwakhanye Aftercare

Anroux Marais, Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, praised the young performers for not giving in to social ills and for using their time constructively.

The overall winners from April’s grand finale will get the opportunity to showcase their talents at the Zabalaza Festival as well as at the Best of DCAS Festival at the KKNK.

DCAS and its partners aim to develop the arts through festivals and providing talented young people with different opportunities. BETTER TOGETHER.
