WC Dam levels show slight drop

5 November 2018

Dam levels in the Western Cape are showing a slight decrease as the province enters the summer season.

The average dam level across the province as at 11 November was 59.6% full. As at 26 September 2016 the levels were above 60%.

Anton Bredell, the minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning in the Western Cape, says dam levels in the Western Cape are concerning and he has called on the public to continue to use water sparingly.

“We remain concerned about the status of our major dams in the province which are all still very far from ideal levels. The exception is the Clanwilliam dam which is nearly 100% full. The districts of prime concern remains the West Coast, Cape Winelands and Central Karoo with the metro also seeing increased pressure.”

Bredell says municipalities are implementing water restrictions where needed.

“These and other interventions are being monitored and assessed on an ongoing basis with the aim of ensuring the continued stability of the water system in the Western Cape.”
