Good progress with roadworks near Groot-Brakrivier

10 October 2018

Good progress is being made with a Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) project to upgrade the portion of MR344 (R102) between Hartenbos and Groot-Brakrivier, as well as the portion of DR1578 between Tergniet and Wolwedans. This R182 million project started in January 2018 and is expected to be completed by mid-2020.

There are currently seven areas where work is being undertaken:

  1. Upgrading of the road from Monte Christo intersection to the Klein-Brakrivier Bridge.
  2. Upgrading of the road through Riverside Village.
  3. Construction of a concrete culvert at Riverside Village.
  4. Upgrading of the MR344 (R102) between Impala road intersection and DR1578 at Tergniet (road is currently closed).
  5. Upgrading of the MR344 (R102) between Tergniet and Groot-Brakrivier.
  6. Construction of the roundabout at Groot-Brakrivier.
  7. Upgrading of DR1578 from Tergniet to the Amy Searle Street.

Half-width construction (involving the closure of one lane) will take place in sections with stop/ go controls to manage the flow of traffic. There are currently four stop/ go control points.

MR344 (R102) at the Monte Christo intersection

This is a daytime control point that allows access to Swan’s Nursery in the section under half-width construction. Because the volume of traffic is low, there are minimal delays.

Riverside Village

This is a 24-hour control point that controls traffic through Riverside while the road is under construction. The waiting period here is about 5 minutes.

MR344 (R102) between Tergniet and Groot-Brakrivier

This is a three-way, 24-hour control point to manage traffic between Tergniet and the entrance to the Total fuel station. The waiting period at this control point is usually about 5 minutes, but may be longer when construction equipment is being moved.

DR1578 between Reebokstene and Amy Searle Street

This is a three-way, 24-hour control point with a waiting time of about 5 minutes.

DTPW is committed to creating short-term Expanded Public Works Programme employment and skills training opportunities. To date, R3,2 million has been spent on targeted enterprises, and 10 799 person-days of work has been created for people from the Mossel Bay municipal area.
