Leadership Conference - Transforming the past and creating a future

Western Cape Health Department hosts Leadership Conference themed “Leadership in action: Transforming the past and creating a future”, 17 – 19 September 2018

From 17 – 19 September, the Western Cape Government Health (WCGH) is hosting a Leadership Conference, which brings together influential leaders as they focus on improving leadership in the public health sector. The conference will cover several matters and include Themed “Leadership in action: Transforming the past and creating a future” several presentations on case studies will depict how, through innovative leadership, the public health system in the Western Cape has adjusted to keep in touch with a growing demand for service. The conference will cover several matters and include:

• innovations systems to improve efficiency
• strengthening inter-disciplinary work towards improved quality
• organizational responses to cope with increased service pressure

Guest speakers such as Trevor Manuel, Prof M Phakeng, Vice Chancellor at UCT, and Dr Ivan Meyer, will be joined by other leading figures in both public and private sector discussing these issues which impacts on everyday functioning of a public health system.

Over the years, the Department has invested in building this capability including leadership, people, processes, systems, and building blocks which enables the Department to be one of the forerunners amongst government departments nationally and in doing so achieve some of the best health outcomes nationally. The health outcomes also reflect the knowledgeable and skilled leaders, managers, and health care professionals with the Western Cape. 

In addressing the delegates at the opening on the Conference on Monday, Western Cape Minister of Health, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo said: “The key drivers for success within the health system are Leadership and Management. The health system requires leaders that are competent, ethical, values driven, strategies driven and inspire those who are at coalface. Strong leadership is a necessary element for a strong health system, and also one of the most vital building blocks within a health system. It is vital that we nurture and sustain leaders who can work strategically within their complex environments to develop a rights-based health system that promotes health equity.”
