Mama G makes a big difference in Khayelitsha Hospital

1 August 2018

During August, formidable women are commemorated and celebrated. A formidable woman who should be recognised for her selfless service and dedication to her community, is Nurse Nombulelo Gloria Geza, a nursing assistant in Khayelitsha District Hospital’s Obstetric Antenatal Ward.

Nurse Geza has been in the health service for more than 30 years and says she chose nursing as a career because of her genuine love for helping people in need. “Nursing runs in my blood. Both my mother and aunt were nurses and I grew up with a dream to follow in their footsteps.”

Affectionately known as Mama G by her patients and colleagues, her willingness to always go the extra mile for her patients has made a big difference in the lives of many. “Mama G took care of me like I was her own child,” says Ms Ntsondwa, a patient of Khayelitsha District Hospital.

Ms Xolelwa Ngqiyoza, from Mfuleni, who was recently a patient in Khayelitsha Hospital’s Antenatal Ward, also lauds Nurse Geza for her dedication. “Mama G has been a huge help to me. She is very caring and understanding. She is the perfect person for the job, has humanity and I want to applaud her for her good work.”

Another happy patient is Ms T Nongoma, who thanks Mama G for taking care of her during her stay. “She made sure that I get all the help I needed. She always checked if we were okay. She was a great help during my stay at the hospital. Thank you Mama!”

Ms Khuthala Mayeki praises Mama G for going beyond the scope of her job to assist her. “I forgot my clothes in the Labour Ward after my discharge, but Nurse Geza made sure I got all my belongings back. I want to acknowledge her for her service. She was like a mother to me. She was always there to assist when I needed her.”
Nurse Geza encourages people to speak up when they are not happy with the service they receive. She adds that people are often surprised when they get to the hospital and receive amazing treatment, as they often have an incorrect perception of the hospital.

“I love my job and being able to make a difference in my own community. Each day feels like an achievement. I like to see our patients leaving the hospital happy and with a smile. People enjoy their stay here,” says Mama G.
