Media Alert: Minister Plato to conduct safety oversight walkabout in Gugulethu

16 July 2018

Tomorrow, Tuesday 17 July 2018, Western Cape Minister of Community Safety, Dan Plato, will conduct a safety oversight walkabout in the community of Gugulethu.

Minister Plato recently met with concerned community leaders from Gugulethu who detailed how the youths’ involvement in gangs and youth gang violence has escalated in the area. They expressed their fears and concerns that young lives may be lost if the situation is not effectively addressed.

Minister Plato’s fact finding walkabout tomorrow aims to engage with the local community leaders who raised their concerns, religious leaders, policing officials and safety stakeholders in the area such as the Community Policing Forums, Neighbourhood Watches and Walking Bus members.

The walkabout needs to further help identify the extent of the youth gang problem in the area, if all safety structures are working optimally, as well as how the silent majority currently living in fear can be included in the whole-of-society approach to improve safety in the community.

Safety is everyone’s responsibility and tomorrow’s walkabout seeks to build on the efforts and dedication of both the police and safety stakeholders in improving safety in Gugulethu.
