Official Opening of the New Khayelitsha Hospital

11 April 2012

The Premier of the Western Cape, Helen Zille, and the Provincial Minister of Health, Theuns Botha, will officially open the new Khayelitsha Hospital on Tuesday, 17 April 2012.

Khayelitsha Hospital will serve thousands of clients from Khayelitsha and is expected to lighten the load of the overburdened GF Jooste and Tygerberg hospitals. It has a large obstetric and maternity unit, an emergency unit, an x-ray department, pharmacy, rehabilitation unit, a mortuary and operating theatres.

Patients from Michael Mapongwana CHC (Community Health Centre), Site B CHC, Nolungile CHC and smaller clinics in the Khayelitsha area will be referred to Khayelitsha Hospital when required.

It will provide access to quality healthcare straight to the community of Khayelitsha and will deliver quality healthcare to approximately 500 000 to 1 500 000 people in the Khayelitsha area.

The hospital has been admitting patients since 16 January 2012 and this has been positively received by both patients and their families.
