Last Day for Public Comment: New Casino on the Cards for Cape Town?

19 April 2012

Friday, 20 April 2012, is the deadline for submission of public comments on the Draft Western Cape Gambling and Racing Act and the Draft Western Cape Gambling and Racing Regulations. The bill provides for one of the Western Cape's outlying casinos to move to the Cape Town Metro. Should the amendments be passed, the casinos will have to bid for the new ten-year exclusivity licence in the Metro.

Interested persons were invited to submit written comments on the draft bill and regulations on or before 20 April 2012.

All comments received will be collated and taken into consideration. The final draft bill will be presented to Cabinet for approval. Once Cabinet approval has been obtained, the bill will be processed through parliamentary procedures.

Minister Alan Winde said: "The Western Cape Government is committed to creating a truly participatory democracy in our province by seeking contribution in the legislative process from all members of the public. It is through collaboration between the public and government that we can make our province better together. A big thank to all those who have submitted comment on the draft bill. We look forward to engaging with the contributions that we have received and to concluding the process of determining whether a new casino is on the cards for the Cape Town Metro."

Minister Winde added: "Should a casino be approved for relocation to the Cape Town Metro, it has the potential to increase the desirability of the Cape Town as a tourist destination, increase tax revenue and improve the livelihoods of all those living in the Western Cape. It will also create new jobs, which is our first strategic objective. If one of the outlying casinos moves to the Metro, they have a responsibility to minimise the impact on job losses in their current region."
