Operation “THATHA ZONKE” a notable success
21 May 2018 – 27 May 2018
The recent national bus strike led to illegal public transport operations and lawlessness by minibus taxi operators in the George area.
During the strike action, minibus taxi drivers became more aggressive towards traffic law enforcement officials. In one case, unknown men freed an illegal operator while in the custody of traffic officials.
To respond to this wave of aggressive and illegal public transport operator behaviour, Provincial Traffic Services launched Operation “Thatha Zonke” (“Take Everything”) between 21 and 27 May 2018 with the assistance of the South African Police Service. A dedicated team of 30 provincial traffic officers equipped with unmarked high performance vehicles fitted with onboard Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) equipment was deployed in the Southern Cape to deal with illegal taxi operators’ disregard for the law. The operations were holistic in the sense that they included the inspections of all motor vehicles and drivers.
The following successes were recorded during the seven days of Operation Thatha Zonke:
- 1 968 vehicles were stopped
- 381 Section 56 notices were issued (notice to pay a fine or appear in court for a moving violation)
- 40 minibus taxis were impounded
- 66 vehicles were suspended from use
- 21 arrests were made:
- 15 for driving under the influence of alcohol
- 2 for reckless and negligent driving
- 1 for a fraudulent operating licence
- 1 illegal immigrant was arrested
- 1 for travelling at excessive speed
- 1 for a fraudulent driving licence.
The objectives of the operation were successfully achieved. Provincial Traffic Services will be closely monitoring the behaviour of public transport operators for the next few weeks. If necessary, further law enforcement initiatives will be implemented to restore respect for the rules of the road.
Provincial Traffic Services acknowledges and appreciates the cooperation and patience of motorists during this week-long operation in the interests of all.
