Friendly competition at the Farmworkers’ Sports Day

14 May 2018

Friendly competition and many laughs were the order of the day at the 10th annual Farmworkers’ Sports day which took place at the Boland Park Stadium in Worcester on 12 May 2018. The sports day was hosted by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), in partnership with the Western Cape Provincial Sport Federation, and with the support of the Cape Winelands Municipality.

Farmworkers from the Cape Winelands, Cape Town Metropolitan area, Eden, Overberg, West Coast and Central Karoo competed in the sports day. They took part in rugby, tug-of-war, soccer, dominoes, netball and cross country as their team members cheered them on from the side lines. Colin Makatees from the West Coast caused great excitement with the first win of the day when he completed the cross country with a time of 11m:44s.

Executive Mayor for the Cape Winelands district, Alderman von Schlicht, welcomed everyone and wished them well in their codes. Gert Loubser from the Western Cape Farmworkers’ Sports Commission opened the games and thanked all departments and organisations who contributed towards to the day.

Acting Chief Director of Sport and Recreation, Thabo Tutu delivered the keynote address on the day. He conveyed a message of support to the development of sport, particularly rural sport development. ”This day does not belong to us as officials, but belongs to the athletes who are going to take part in the sports day,” said Mr Tutu.

Anroux Marais, the minister of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport walked through the stadium and encouraged all the participants.

DCAS and its partners strive to give all the people of the Western Cape the opportunity to participate in sport and recreation.  We encourage farmworkers to participate and to embrace a healthy lifestyle - BETTER TOGETHER.
