The Inaugural Neighbourhood Watch Awards 2017/18

26 March 2018

The first ever Neighbourhood Watch Awards ceremony was held on the evening of 26 March 2018, at the Cape Town Civic Centre, by The City Of Cape Town, in partnership with the Department of Community Safety, in honour and appreciation of Neighbourhood Watch structures and the individuals that work relentlessly to promote and maintain safety across Western Cape communities.

Over 80 nominations from various Neighbourhood Watches pinnacled at 34 awards in three categories and five sub-categories, that honour the work and contribution to community safety brought about by the Neighbourhood Watch groups over  the 2017/18 year.

The evening’s winners were witnessed by other fellow nominees and special guest from the City, Provincial Government and the South African Polices Service.

The awards ceremony comes just months after the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement between Western Cape Government and the City of Cape Town which served to recognise and support Accredited Neighbourhood Watches.

Western Cape MEC of Community Safety, Dan Plato, said: “The NHW Awards ceremony, the first under the new WCG-City partnership, will showcase our appreciation of our NHWs and their members as treasured safety partners.

Western Cape MEC of Community Safety, Dan Plato, said: “The NHW Awards ceremony, the first under the new WCG-City partnership, will showcase our appreciation of our NHWs and their members as treasured safety partners. The different categories in the NHW Awards for 2017 are designed to honour the many different ways in which NHW members contribute towards safety.

This includes formal patrols, those who work closely with the various emergency services, who assist with social issues; who work with religious organisations and NGOs; or even those working closely with our schools.”

As it stands, over 130 Neighbourhood Watches have been accredited in the Cape Town metropolitan area and many more across the province.
