30 September 2017

On Saturday 30 September 2017, the Minister of Community Safety, Dan Plato, signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the City of Cape Town that recognises and supports the city’s accredited neighbourhood watches.

The signing ceremony at the Cape Town Civic Centre was witnessed by over 100 people who are members of the accredited neighbourhood watches from the metro. The MOA offers the structure of incentives and accountability, including resourcing and training. The aim is to provide as many of the city’s accredited NHWs as possible with access to opportunities in a coordinated manner without overspending on resources.

Councilor Jean-Pierre Smith emphasized the important work of the neighbourhood watches and the significance ofrecognising them as partners in combatting crime.

“We are committed to helping neighbourhood watches become functional, accountable and capable partners in the fight against crime. The City of Cape Town is aware of the impact they make in their communities and we commend them for it,” he said.

He also said that the City will provide these organisations with enough resources to create safer communities by working with residents.
