Supplementary Exam Results: Western Cape Exceeds 34 000 NSC Passes

7 May 2012

Media Statement by Donald Grant, Minister of Education

I am very delighted to announce that the Western Cape has exceeded 34 000 passes for the 2011 NSC examinations.

In January 2012, it was announced that the Western Cape achieved a pass rate of 82.9%, with 33 110 passes.

I am now proud to announce that in the 2011 Supplementary exams, 804 additional learners have now passed the NSC examinations.

This has increased the overall pass rate in the Western Cape to 84.7%.

I would like to congratulate each of the candidates that passed these examinations.

We have repeatedly made it clear that the number of passes in the NSC examinations is arguably more important than the percentage pass rate as it is a far more accurate reflection of the health and progress of the system.

It reflects that more learners are being retained within the system and are passing the NSC examinations than ever before.

Therefore, I am pleased that 804 more learners can now take advantage of further education and training opportunities that are on offer to them.

Candidates who have yet to receive their results via the post can also call the WCED certification/examinations division to obtain their results by phoning 021 467 2000.

Those candidates that have failed will be able to register for the NSC examinations later this year. They will be afforded a special dispensation which will enable them to register late; the deadline will be 15 May.

A total of 45 981 candidates have currently registered for the 2012 NSC examinations. This figure is expected to change slightly due to reasons above. This is already 4 720 more candidates than the previous year.

The date of the 2012 NSC exam, according to the National Department of Basic Education, is Monday, 22 October 2012.

The class of 2012 has much to live up to this year.

While the WCED has planned an extensive programme this year for our Grade 12s, it is up to each of them to ensure that they use the tuition and study opportunities available to them optimally each day.

We will be supporting them every step of the way!
