Ministers Grant and Plato to Observe a Search and Seizure Operation at Manyano High School

13 May 2012

On 15 May, Provincial Education Minister Donald Grant and Provincial Community Safety Minister Dan Plato will be observing a search and seizure operation at Manyano High School in Khayelitsha.

In recent months, there has been an increase in gang violence amongst the youth in Khayelitsha.

While the incidents of violence have taken place outside the school gates and within the community after school hours, it has come to the Western Cape Education Department's attention that weapons are reportedly being brought into schools for use after school hours.

SAPS has therefore conducted a number of search and seizures recently at schools as a security measure as well as a means to deter learners from bringing weapons into schools.

On 15 May, the two ministers will be observing such a search.

Minister Grant will also be describing what measures schools can take themselves in conducting their own search and seizures.
