MEDIA ALERT: MINISTER MARAIS TO CELEBRATE CULTURAL EXPRESSION AND SPORTING EXCELLENCE IN SOUTHERN CAPE

Tomorrow, 1 February 2017, Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais will officially open the annual Dias Festival in Mossel Bay.

Thereafter, Minister Marais and the Executive Mayor of the Mossel Bay Municipality, Alderman Harry Levendal will celebrate the 29th anniversary of the Bartolomeu Dias Museum on Friday, 2 February 2018.

The museum was opened on 3 February 1989 as a culmination of the 1988 Dias Festival, which was held to commemorate 500 years after Bartolomeu Dias’ landing in Mossel Bay in 1488. The Portugese government also donated the life-sized replica of the ship that was used by Dias and his crew members, which is still housed in the Maritime Museum.

The celebration will include the ceremonial cutting of the cake as well as local entertainment.
