Minister Carlisle: Mitchell's Plain District Hospital Will be Completed on Time

28 May 2012

Robin Carlisle, the Minister of Transport and Public Works in the Western Cape, has announced that the 9 May 2012 fire in the Emergency Department of the Mitchell's Plain District Hospital, which is under construction, has not affected the target completion date.

"The actual contractual completion date of the hospital is next year February, but the contractor was aiming for a completion date four months earlier than that," Minister Carlisle said.

"We are confident that we can meet the earlier target of November this year because a dedicated contracts manager has been appointed to focus solely on the reconstruction of the damaged section of the hospital."

Construction in the emergency wing was briefly suspended after the fire so that forensic investigators could investigate its cause. The site has since been handed back to the contractor and the clearing of the rubble is commencing this week as part of the reconstruction.

"The construction of the rest of the building has continued full steam ahead, as per the programme," said Minister Carlisle.
