16 Days of Activism: Min. joins corporates hosting a children’s charity event

7 December 2017

As part of our ongoing 16 Days of Activism commemorations, the Western Cape Minister of Social Development, Albert Fritz, joined Grandwest CSI for a children’s Christmas party at the Baphumelele Children’s Home, in Khayelitsha.

The initiative was driven by the Grandwest CSI team in partnership with other corporates, namely;

  • Burger King (sponsored the lunch),
  • Baskin Robbins (sponsored ice cream),
  • and Dunkin Donuts.

As we mark these 16 Days of Activism and beyond, we continue to encourage the private sector and big corporates to donate and partner with registered NGOs, especially those rendering services to children and other vulnerable groups.

The Baphumele Children’s Home is a registered NGO run by Ms. Rosie Mashale. The facility is funded by the Department to render critical Child & Youth Care (CYCC) services in Khayelitsha. CYCCs are a critical part of our child protection infrastructure in the province and have been allocated R98.2-million this financial year.

Ms. Mashale runs on our best CYCC facilities, and renders a basket of services, including an ECD centre. Most notably, Ms. Mashale has been nominated in the top 10 of the CNN Hero of the year award, and jets off to New York next week for the awards ceremony.

We wish her well and good luck, and hope that she’ll take the accolade.

We’d like to thank the Granwest CSI team, Burger King, Baskin Robbins and Dunkin Donuts for their generosity.

The Department will continue to invest heavily in services to children, and vulnerable groups. As we mark these 16 Days of Activism and beyond, we continue to call on those experiencing abuse to #GetHelp and #ReportAbuse. The public can visit any of our 37 local offices to access social workers, or contact the DSD hotline on 0800 220 250.
